"Bingham Primary School is the latest to join the new schools estate in Nottinghamshire, one which I’m proud to say sees 9 out of 10 schools across the county rated good or outstanding. A good education gives children and young people a solid start in life which leads to a whole range of options later in life."

Councillor Tracey Taylor

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People | Nottinghamshire County Council

Romans’ Quarter in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, is a rapidly growing community with 1,200 new homes built in the area since 2018.

Ensuring that every child has a place, Nottinghamshire County Council commissioned Arc Partnership to deliver a brand-new 1 Form-Entry primary school. Designed and project managed by Arc Partnership, the £7m project was delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction through SCAPE Construction.

Delivered on time and within budget, the project is a fantastic example of how close stakeholder collaboration, a shared aspiration to achieve net zero and the adoption of technologies, with a welcoming environment for it's pupils, but enhanced social value outcomes for a local community.

With more than 1,200 new homes created in Bingham since 2018, and a further 1,050 houses scheduled in the Romans' Quarter in the coming years, Nottinghamshire County Council needed to provide more school places to accommodate local families. As a unique joint venture between Nottinghamshire County Council and SCAPE, Arc Partnership was appointed to design and deliver a new primary school that would easily allow for expansion should it be required.

In support of the council's aspirations on carbon-neutrality, environmental features and sustainable practices were placed at the heart of the design and build, and close collaboration between all stakeholders throughout the duration of the project would ensure social value creation.

The school was the flagship project for Arc Partnership’s application for BIM ISO 19650 accreditation, which was achieved in autumn 2022.

As part of this process, Arc Partnership created a federated model as a digital twin of the school to eliminate construction issues before the school even got to site. This approach also offered clash detection benefits, greater programme certainty, and the ability for all stakeholders to visualise the project as a whole.

Morgan Sindall Construction adopted their 'Intelligent Solutions' approach to the construction of the school, meaning that the project benefitted from a number of digital and platform design capabilities, as well as modern construction methods and innovative carbon reduction tools. This included supporting the shared aspiration for a highly efficient operational building. The school was therefore fitted with air source heat pumps, LED lighting and electrically operated roof lights, in addition to instructing a specialist air tightness company to work with Arc Partnership to ensure the building achieved the highest air permeability scores.

Delivered ahead of schedule and on budget, Bingham Primary School is the latest school to join the Community Inclusive Trust (C.I.T) and offers 210 primary school places and 26 nursery places for families from the new community.

The one-storey, 1,405sq ft school features seven classrooms, a multi-use games area (MUGA), playground and a hall, which doubles up as a dining and indoor sports hall. In keeping with the shared carbon neutral aspirations, the fully electric building is designed to be self-sufficient with air source heat pumps, high-efficiency lighting and two electric vehicle charging stations. The school has been designed to allow for future expansion if required, taking the total number of pupils up to 315.

Morgan Sindall Construction worked closely with suppliers and subcontractors to reduce the carbon footprint of the build as part of its ‘10 Tonne Carbon Challenge’ initiative. In total, the site was able to save 39.48 tonnes of carbon and diverted 99.7% of site materials from waste throughout the project as part of its efforts to reach its net zero goals.

In total, the project generated a social value spend of £2.3m, with a local labour spend of 73% within a 40-mile radius of the project, and approximately 50% spent within 20 miles. Additionally, seven local microbusinesses and a Social Enterprise were appointed on the project, to ensure the local area and businesses directly benefitted from the build.

It has been a hugely exciting and rewarding experience working with all the stakeholders. The building’s eco-credentials are important to us, aligning well to our aspiration to teach and encourage our pupils to become global citizens of the future."

It has been an honour to work as part of such a supportive, collaborative team to design and deliver the Bingham Primary School. To deliver this project on time and budget with colleagues from Nottinghamshire County Council, CIT and Morgan Sindall Construction has been a really positive experience and it’s a pleasure to know the children of Bingham are benefiting already from this truly inspirational learning environment.”

Head of Major Projects | Arc Partnership

It’s always a privilege to work on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council to deliver schools which will ease pressure on pupil places whilst simultaneously providing new teaching spaces that will contribute towards reducing our environmental impact. Despite a couple of delays, we were able to navigate these challenges and deliver the school on time and on budget thanks to a collaborative approach with our supply chain, Arc Partnership, SCAPE and the client. I’m also extremely proud of our social value contributions which were achieved whilst the team worked tirelessly to create a wonderful learning environment for children and future generations of the town to benefit from."
