The three blue light services in Lincolnshire were based in ageing outdated facilities dispersed over a wide area, creating inefficiencies and process issues.
Lincolnshire County Council have worked with Willmott Dixon on the design and construction of a new modern base, housing Fire, Police and Ambulance services in one location – the first tri-service operational station in the country.
The current old facilities needed to be demolished and replaced with a modern site that creates efficiency for all three emergency services to work together collaboratively.
The environment of this new facility generates the ability to allow the blue light teams to work together in one place, rather than in a network of smaller offices.
The main challenge was clarifying the customer brief and turning their vision into a reality. This project was specifically challenging due to there being numerous different stakeholders, with varying needs, as well as the customer with their own vision and requirements.
Examples of this are that EMAS (East Midlands Ambulance Services) require all shared areas to be sterilised. This includes seating and even the communal fridge! Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue needed to be based on the ground floor as they have a requirement to be in the fire engine within two minutes of receiving a call.
Lincolnshire County Council are leading the way in blue light facilities as this is the first tri-service operational station in the country.
The building harnesses efficiencies amongst all three services that separate buildings could not. It offers an opportunity for all of the crews to work, train and socialise; building a better understanding between them and a higher quality response.
Probably our best building in the whole of the East Midlands. One of the ironic things is we’ve actually got a better building and it’s saving us money. It’s more cost effective, it’s a newer building, we’re sharing the costs of maintaining the building with fire and the police, so everybody gains.”
