Menzieshill Community Centre
This is an important part of the redevelopment of Menzieshill which we have been working really hard on.”
Cllr Michael Marra | Dundee City Council
Regenerating facilities for the Menzieshill community.
The new community centre, situated in the Lochee ward of Dundee, is packed with adaptable, community-friendly features, and has been constructed by Robertson in front of the existing community facilities.
This is the third of Dundee City Council’s developments to regenerate the facilities available to the Menzieshill community, all procured through SCAPE SCOTLAND frameworks and delivered by Robertson. Work has previously included the new Tayview Primary School and Menzieshill Community Gardens.
A modern community centre
The new centre comprises:
- a library, youth room, multi-purpose community rooms and a café
- two sports halls, with electronic scoreboards and basketball nets
Robertson Civil Engineering carried out the groundworks and concrete works on the project.
Substantial levels of contamination were highlighted, and a detailed remediation plan was created.
An award-winning project
Robertson Construction Tayside was awarded a Considerate Constructors Scheme Gold National Site Award for the incredible standards upheld during the Menzieshill Community Centre project.
The project was praised for its exceptional approach to considerate practice through fantastic external appearances and brilliant work with the local community. The commitments shown in respect to the environment, safety and the workforce were "exemplary".
2020 Gold National Site Award winners have performed to the highest standards of considerate construction, setting them apart from all other Scheme registered activities that completed on or before 31 December 2019.
Following a six month shut down during the Covid-19 pandemic, Mike Welsh, Menzieshill’s learning and development manager said the centre was keen to restart groups such as the adult literacy programme, CONNECT advice group, the North Law legal group and the Money Action Centre, adult learning classes, youth groups and mother and toddler classes.
One good thing that came out of lockdown is that we really began to recognise the issues that affect areas like Menzieshill. We have spoken to a lot of people who live locally and we think it will help us to tailor the services we offer post lockdown to suit the needs of local residents.”
