1,600 young people from across the region tried their hand at bricklaying, plastering, surveying and 3D modelling during Lincolnshire’s 15th annual Construction Week.

The three day event, hosted at Lincolnshire Showground, was supported by 33 local businesses, including Lindum – one of our delivery partners on the Regional Construction framework..

Lindum Group established the first Lincoln Construction Week in 2003, and is still heavily involved today. All the construction-related activities on offer are designed to provide pupils with a taster into the varied careers that are available.

With the construction industry representing around seven per cent of employment in the East Midlands, it provides a large amount of opportunity for young people.

From heritage skills to virtual reality, the students get a chance to see that there really is something for everyone within the construction industry.

The event is free for schools to attend, and is directed at young people between Years 6 and 13. There are also extra sessions hosted for people who are not in education, employment or training.

During the day, participants are guided through activities by professionals working in the industry, and have the chance to try out different disciplines whilst talking to business leaders about their own careers, how they entered the industry, and what it is like on a day-to-day basis.

Paula Bailey, Delivery Manager at The EBP said, “The event continues to grow and this year we hosted 35 schools over the three days. It is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn real skills and take part in activities that give a flavour of what a career in the construction industry could be like and for the schools to build contacts with local employers.”

Due to a big skills shortage in construction, we need to be engaging with children at the right age in order to get them interested, and for them to look forward to having a career in the industry when they are older. Construction Week is a prime example of this.

Helen Bedford, Social Value Manager at Lindum

Dan Clark, Bids and Marketing Coordinator at Lindum says, he remembers attending the event as a Year 8 pupil. This year, he gave a talk to the attendees to explain how the week sparked his interest in the construction sector.

Helen Bedford, Social Value Manager at Lindum concluded, “We are the founding partner of Lincolnshire Construction Week, which this year was attended by more than 1,600 school children.

“It was great to see so many children attending and engaging with the activities on offer. It gave everyone a taster of the wide range of activities that take place in the industry.”

Organised by The Lincoln Group Training Association (LGTA) in partnership with The EBP (Education Business Partnership) and Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the event took place from 2nd - 4th October 2018.

Through the performance management processes embedded into our frameworks, we deliver high levels of social value creation on all projects, from school engagement to inspiring the next generation. We recently hosted a podcast on Building a Future Fit Workforce with Morgan Sindall, another delivery partner on our Regional Construction framework.
