Balfour Beatty, appointed by Reading Borough Council, are delivering the new Green Park train station, due for completion at the end of 2021 and open to the public in June 2022.

The much needed station will improve accessibility and connect commuters to Green Park Business Park as well as the residents of Green Park Village and the supporters of Reading Football Club, whilst reducing congestion on the A33 motorway by offering an alternative sustainable mode of travel.

The construction of the station has posed some challenges due to the line being a live site, with the 15-metre and 24-tonne footbridge having to be lifted over the railway with a mobile crane that weighed 200 tonnes. The two lift shafts, two flights of stairs, support towers and overbridge were completed over four consecutive weekends to further minimise disruption.

It is good to see real progress on the construction of the new Green Park station.

Tony Page, Reading Borough Council lead for strategic environment, planning and transport

Tony continued, "when operational, Green Park station will form an integral part of Reading’s ever-growing sustainable transport infrastructure with more homes, businesses and leisure developments planned in the south of the borough."

The new station is predicted to create up to 7,500 new jobs and 1,500 new homes by improving access to Green Park in addition to the Greenwave buses already running. The main purpose of the train station is to improve transport links for commuters. Once built, it will become the new station at the top of the existing Reading to Basingstoke line, with two trains per hour. Travellers will be able to reach Reading in six minutes, Basingstoke in 20, Paddington in 40 (via Reading), Canary Wharf in 60 (once the Crossrail is in place), and Southampton in 60 (via Basingstoke).
